Why do I need a Notary?

Notarizing your document helps prevent forgery and is one of the foremost ways used to avoid fraud in legal documents. In any legal proceeding, a Notary seal, if present on a document, will act as confirmation for the courts that the signatures were placed by a genuine person and not forged or fabricated.

Notary Public

A Notary Public is someone authorized by the government to administer oaths and declarations. They verify the identity of the signing parties and their signatures on the documents required. After witnessing signatures, the Notary Public signs and seals the documents with their official seal.

What is an Affidavit?

An Affidavit is a sworn statement from an individual that is declared to be true. It is an oath to the truth which must be witnessed and signed by a commissioner for taking oaths in Ontario.

Notarized/True Copy

The title kind of gives it away here... to get a notarized or true copy of a document, the notary must compare the original document to the copy and verify its accuracy.

Statutory Declaration

Similar to an affidavit, a statutory declaration is a written declaration of facts. However, rather than a sworn oath, this declaration is administered by the Notary Public.

Letters of Invitation

This is required when inviting a guest to Canada. A Notary administers an oath/affirmation, witnesses the party’s signature, and notarizes the document.
